大阪市立近代美術館（仮称）心斎橋展示室（大阪市中央区南船場3、TEL 06-4301-7285）で現在、「油絵の大阪−商都に生きた絵描きたち−」展が開かれている。（なんば経済新聞）
「大阪の美術史を明らかにすること」を使命に掲げる同館。同展は、明治から昭和初期にかけて発展した「大阪の油絵の歴史」をひもといていくもの。「草創期」と「発展期」の2部構成で、商都・大阪が育んだ洋画家26人を紹介する。
前半の「草創期」では、油絵が大阪に伝わった明治から大正に焦点をあてる。写真の代わりに挿絵が用いられていた時代。山内愚僊や松原三五郎、赤松麟作など当時の洋画家は、新聞社や美術学校で生計を立てながら油絵の普及に努めていたという。会場には、写実が基本の「正統派」作品40点が並ぶ。
続く「発展期」では、そうした先駆者たちの努力が実り、油絵が広まった大正末から昭和初期の作品32点を紹介。「近代に生きる日本人画家として、どんな表現ができるのか。いかに人と違う新しい表現ができるかを追求していた時代。他の地方から大阪に移ってきた洋画家が多かった草創期に比べ、大阪出身者が多く活躍したこの時期、小出楢重や国枝金三、鍋井克之ら当時の洋画家たちによって、東京とも京都とも違う『大阪らしい』個性が育まれていった」（学芸員の高柳有紀子さん）。仲間同士で設立したさまざまな洋画研究所が美術学校の役割を務め、「洋画家の人口が一気に増えた」という。
明治に創刊された漫画雑誌「大阪パック」や1925（大正14）年創刊の雑誌「マロニエ」をはじめ、山内愚僊の挿絵が掲載された明治20年代の新聞など、会場には洋画家たちの当時の活動が垣間見られる貴重な資料も併せて展示する。
開館時間は11時〜19時（入館は18時30分まで）。観覧料は、一般＝500円、高校・大学生＝300円。11月7日まで。
